Elementary Curriculum

Mathematics

The elementary My Math program focuses on developing basic skills and fundamental mathematical understanding over time, first through informal exposure to concepts and then through more formal and direct instruction of specific concepts. Students are taught these concepts through a “spiraling” sequence so they develop mastery over time. Students participate in many different math activities and hands-on games individually, with a partner, in small groups and as a whole class. eSpark Math and Reflex math help support the math instruction

English Language Arts

A literacy workshop approach provides each student with rich experiences in reading, writing, listening, speaking, phonics, word study and grammar, with a large portion of the language arts block dedicated to reading skill development. Leveled readers are used during guided reading instruction to differentiate instruction so that all children read on their appropriate reading level. This approach provides the opportunity to accelerate children to the next reading level as soon as they demonstrate mastery. Writing is emphasized at each grade level with instruction on developing ideas, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, voice, conventions and presentation. Students are exposed to different genres of reading and writing as they progress through our system. Units of study include, Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry.

Science

The nationally acclaimed K-3 ASSET science program promotes inquiry-based learning, allowing students to develop their own understanding through questioning, analyzing information, and communicating with others. Students work cooperatively to build analytical skills such as observing, recording data, categorizing, creating journals, and communicating results.

Social Studies

Social studies topics share a common theme throughout our literacy program- people relating to and interacting with other people in their environments. The central theme of social studies is to have our students read and write about social studies concepts.

Special Area Subjects

In addition to the core curriculum, students participate in art, music, physical education, and library classes each six-day rotation. The library supports our literacy program along with STEM and technology education.
